The water pump (also known as the circulating pump) plays an important role in a car's engine cooling system. Its main task is to maintain a constant flow of coolant in the engine cooling system.
Water pumps are fitted to the engine. There is a constant supply of coolant from the radiator to the engine and back again. This creates a closed system in which the coolant circulates, absorbing heat from the engine and transferring it to the radiator for further cooling.
Pumps are mechanical (driven by a belt or chain) and electric (powered by the on-board electrical system).
Mechanical pumps always rotate when the engine is running, while electric pumps can control the speed of the impeller. Speed control allows more precise control of engine temperature and efficient use of energy.
Check carefully for signs of coolant leaks. To prevent overheating, it is recommended that the water pump is replaced according to the car manufacturer's schedule or if there are coolant leaks.
Engine overheating is often associated with pump malfunction, belt failure or impeller damage. Installing water pumps can be a daunting task and it is recommended that you visit a garage. The following steps must be followed for installation:
1. Ensure that the engine has cooled down and the vehicle is switched off before starting the installation. Prepare the necessary tools, a new water pump, new seals and gaskets (if supplied separately) and sealant if required.
2. Locate the water pump in your car. It is usually located at the front of the engine, close to the radiator or belts.
3. Loosen and remove the belt or chain connected to the pump. Disconnect all pipes, couplings and connections connected to the water pump.
4. Remove the old pump: loosen the bolts or nuts securing the water pump and carefully unscrew it.
5. Install the new pump in place of the old one, aligning the mounting holes. If the installation technique involves the use of sealant, it is necessary to lubricate the area where the pump is to be fitted to the engine. Tighten the fixing bolts or nuts, but do not overtighten to avoid damage.
6. Reconnect the pipes, plugs and connections to the water pump in the reverse order to that in which they were disconnected. Ensure that all connections are tight and properly secured.
7. Reinstall the belts or chain, tightening them according to the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations.
8. After installing the new water pump, check the operation of the cooling system by starting the engine. Check that there are no excessive noises or leaks and that the engine temperature remains within normal limits.
Remember that it is recommended to change the water pump after approximately 90-100 thousand kilometers. Replace all pulleys and drive belts that work with the pump - this can save you time and money in the future.
To prolong the life of the water pump, use only high-quality antifreeze. Otherwise, you will have to replace the pump much more often.
Water pumps typically consist of a shaft, casing, drive and rotor with blades (impeller). STRON impellers are made of durable, corrosion-resistant steel or lithium aluminum to provide reliable heat transfer and prevent engine overheating.
The water pump works in a cycle, pumping coolant from the radiator and delivering it to the engine where it cools the heated parts. The liquid then returns to the radiator for further cooling before being recirculated.
The pump casing is made of durable material to protect all internal components. Inside the casing is a shaft that connects the pulley and the impeller. As the pulley rotates, the impeller rotates. The impeller, as the rotating part of the water pump, drives the coolant. The impeller has blades that create a flow of fluid in the desired direction. A water pump usually has two bearings, one at the front and one at the rear, to ensure smooth rotation of the impeller. The bearings may be ball bearings or roller bearings. The pump has seals - shaft seals - to prevent coolant from leaking.
The water pump is driven by a drive. In a car, this is often a drive belt or chain that is connected to the engine crankshaft and transmits rotation to the pump shaft.
